SEJARAH / HISTORY
The Faculty of Film, Theatre and Animation was established in 1998 and during that time it was known as Faculty of Performing Arts. The idea of establishing the faculty was initiated a year before, during Dato’ Ir. Dr Haji Ahmad Zaidee Laidin, Director/ Rector of Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), in keeping with the development of the creative industry in Malaysia. It was during his leadership, ITM was granted all the powers of a university which sees the change in name of ITM to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in August 1999.
Part of its initial fund came from the Ministry of Arts, Culture, and Tourism, thus reflecting a close relationship between performing arts and events which could positively promote our country and its rich heritage. The initiative was eventually approved by the senate and the ITM Board of Directors in August 1998, followed by an announcement of the establishment of Faculty of Performing Arts and Associate Professor Mohd Najib bin Hj Md Noor had been appointed as its first Dean.
The new faculty was located at Pusat Inovasi, INTEKMA Resort, Shah Alam. Initially, the new faculty was a combination of programmes from ITM’s Cultural Centre, film courses offered under the School of Mass Communications, and music courses from the School of Art and Design. In 2000, the faculty was relocated to Shah Alam Stadium, Section 13 Shah Alam.
In 2002, Associate Professor Md Rushdi Kubon bin Md Shariff was appointed as a second dean. Three years later, in 2005, Professor Dr. Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan was appointed as a third dean, which sees the change in name of Faculty of Performing Arts to Faculty of Artistic and Creative Technology. In the same year, the faculty was moved to a new site, Puncak Perdana Campus until now.
After serving as a dean for six years, Professor Dr. Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan was replaced by Dato’ Professor A. Razak Hj. Mohaideen in 2011 until now. As the fourth dean, he later changed the name of the faculty to Faculty of Film, Theatre and Animation as we all know today.
